April 13, 2015: It Won't Rain On This Parade

At Hudson, Quebec’s big Saint Patrick’s parade held on March 21, I overheard two marshals commenting about how lucky they were with the weather. Had they been blessed with blue skies and comfortable temperatures as befits this annual kickoff to spring? No. They were expressing relief that it was snowing, rather than coming down as freezing rain. Talk about the luck of the Irish!

In 2015, it is the harsh truth that in documenting the change of season, many of the photographs have an undeniably wintry feel. Warmer days are finally showing up, but as the mercury rises, our joy is tempered with wariness.

Back in early March while in the grips of a lengthy cold spell, a large retailer filled clothing racks and display cases with Formula 1 gear. Perhaps the summery apparel in Ferrari red will sit on the shelves for another month, but I commend the store for its unabashed enthusiasm and the “If you build it, he will come” approach. Come the Grand Prix du Canada on June 7, we can only hope that Lewis Hamilton, Felipe Massa, Sebastian Vettel and others won’t be spinning their wheels on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve while trailing a Montreal snowplow. It’s been that kind of year.

In much of Canada, early spring bears scant resemblance to flowery descriptions by Victorian poets of a landscape being gently reawakened, caressed by rays of golden light and nourished by occasional sprinkles. Typically, it is our most capricious season.

We have persevered through snow storms, heavy rains and fierce winds. The time has come to appreciate perfect days when neighbourhoods are alive with people (and dogs) enjoying the moment.

This is the thirtieth edition of the Focal Point blog, where you can count on the view from the road less travelled and a perspective on Canada that is slightly off kilter.
