The world is awash in oil while our loonie swan dives; but as Frank and Pat Carey pointed out to their guests at Wallace & Carey’s Oakville Irish coffee get-together on January 21, 2016, there has never been a better time to look at things differently and take advantage of exceptional opportunities!

In these parts, El Niño has fashioned a winter punctuated with scant snow cover akin to sprinkled confectioners’ sugar. The light too, is very different. There is a weightiness to it: sombre, restrained and melancholy, it insinuates itself through low, substantial clouds, wrapping the subject in a shadowless embrace.

Discouraged? This is not the winter of my discontent! El Niño has proven to be a great catalyst for growth. Through the camera’s eye it is challenging, even inspiring to capture in a perceptive way, what at first glance may appear unremarkable.

That said, it is only early February. A meaningful accumulation of snow followed by bright sunshine will do wonders to lift the spirit of skiers, snowmobilers and many others, including this photographer.
