October 29, 2014: October's Opus

For two weeks in October, I chased a golden and crimson surge as it swept south from the Algoma region of Northern Ontario, through Nipissing, the Madawaska, Ottawa and Gatineau valleys, then watched as it faded to grey in the Laurentians north of Montreal.

While maples, birches, basswoods, aspens, alders and oaks glow, gleam, dazzle and impress, it is left to the tamarack, a deciduous conifer, to perform the season’s coda, displaying its brilliant yellow needles against the now bare woods.
