It began in 1945 as a gift from Princess Juliana of the Netherlands: a polychromatic display of thanks to Canadian soldiers for their role in the liberation of her homeland. It was also a show of appreciation to Canada for providing safe harbour to her family in 1940 and hosting the birth of Princess Margriet in 1943 at Ottawa’s Civic Hospital.

Today, The Canadian Tulip Festival endures as a symbol of freedom and friendship between two nations, a celebration built around 1 million tulips that, for 10 days in May, is the focus of attention for 600,000 enthusiastic anthophiles.
