You have to give this to Old Man Winter: his playbook doesn’t include sneaking up on the unsuspecting or coddling the unprepared. He is bold, in your face, and guaranteed to send shivers up and down your spine.

Monctonians, Saint Johners and Charlottetowners endured a veritable snowpocalypse while the Prairies persevered through several blasts of Arctic air that plunged Saskatoon, Regina and Winnipeg into the deep freeze. Even Southern Ontario weighed in with extreme cold warnings made worse by severe windchill and whiteouts while, according to Environment Canada, Montrealers braved the iciest February since 1889.

For those of us who won’t forsake Lloydminster for Los Cabos, Thunder Bay for Montego Bay, or Val-d’Or for Varadero, we might as well embrace winter for what it is. Our mantra is slip, slide and tumble, just do it on the toboggan runs, ski slopes and skating rinks, not the icy streets and sidewalks.

The days are growing discernibly longer and we stand just two weeks and change away from the vernal equinox. With that signpost comes some assurance of warmer weather taking hold. Yes, there are two or three snowstorms left, not to mention another cold snap, but the inevitability of spring is no longer debatable.

In a few short weeks the river ice will break up; the sap in the maples will start to run; the snow geese will return on their migration north; where black ice once made for treacherous driving conditions, potholes will make for treacherous driving conditions; crocuses and daffodils will push through the thawing earth; and the Leafs will be mathematically eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs. Another Canadian winter will be in the books.
